Division 39

Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology (APA)

2022–2023

For two consecutive years, I designed the promotional campaigns for the Annual Spring Meeting of Division 39: Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychology (APA), creating visual concepts that reflect the organization’s intellectual depth and contemporary relevance within the psychoanalytic field.

Division 39 represents professionals committed to the study, practice, and development of psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy within the broader field of psychology. Founded in 1979 as the 39th division of the American Psychological Association (APA), the Society gathers over 3,000 members worldwide, including doctoral-level psychologists, graduate students, and allied mental health professionals.

Each year, its Spring Meeting convenes more than sixty symposia and workshops exploring the evolving landscape of psychoanalytic theory, clinical practice, and cultural discourse. My work involved translating each meeting’s conceptual theme into a cohesive visual identity used across digital and print media.

  • Graphic Design

Challenge

The main challenge was to design campaign visuals that resonate intellectually and emotionally with a diverse psychoanalytic community while maintaining a consistent aesthetic across multiple materials and formats. Each year’s theme required a distinct conceptual direction, balancing symbolism, clarity, and depth.

Solution

  • Division 39 — 41st Annual Spring Meeting (2022)
    Concept: Trauma and (Trans)cendence
Visual concept exploring repair, transformation, and resilience through layered abstraction and transcendent symbolism.

  • Division 39 — 42nd Annual Spring Meeting (2023)
Concept: Our Beautiful Struggle — Destruction, Creation, and Psychoanalysis
Design focused on the tension between collapse and emergence, evoking the creative process inherent to psychoanalytic work.

Each campaign included tailored compositions, typographic systems, and color palettes adaptable for print, web, and social media use.

Results

  • Developed two consecutive annual campaigns that elevated the visual identity of Division 39’s Spring Meeting.
  • Created cohesive design systems adaptable across programs, websites, and event communications.
  • Enhanced recognition and engagement within one of the world’s largest psychoanalytic professional communities.
