New Observations
Contemporary Art and Culture Journal
2020
In 2020, I collaborated as Art Director with editor Mia Feroleto on New Observations, an independent, non-profit journal dedicated to contemporary art and culture. I led the art direction for issues 135 and 136—The Pine Ridge Reservation: Prisoner of War Camp #344 and Consciousness and Contact: The Awakening—developing the visual concepts and editorial design in dialogue with each issue’s curatorial and thematic focus.
Founded in the early 1980s by artist Lucio Pozzi, New Observations has long served as a collaborative platform where artists, writers, and thinkers explore the intersections of art, consciousness, and social change. Each edition is guest-edited, conceived as a collective artwork, and reflects the magazine’s ongoing commitment to artistic activism and cultural inquiry.

Challenge
Each issue of New Observations presents a distinct editorial vision shaped by guest editors and contributors. The challenge was to create visual identities for both issues that would honor the integrity of their voices—ranging from Indigenous activism to explorations of consciousness—while maintaining coherence within the journal’s established aesthetic.
Solution
I developed tailored visual systems for each issue, combining typography, image treatment, and spatial rhythm to reflect the tone and themes of the content. For Issue 135, the design foregrounded the historical and emotional gravity of the Pine Ridge narratives, while Issue 136 emphasized openness and transcendence through color, light, and composition.
Results
- Successfully designed two editions that amplified the journal’s mission of uniting art, consciousness, and activism.
- Strengthened the publication’s visual continuity while honoring diverse editorial voices.
- Contributed to the continued legacy of New Observations as a vital platform for artistic and social dialogue.
